How does it work?

  1. The countdown follows your device’s midnight, wherever you are. Its time is checked against a reference clock and corrected if it drifts: everyone shouts “Happy New Year” at the same moment.
  2. For the party, tap “Party mode”: the numbers fill the whole screen and it stays on. Perfect on a TV or a projector.
  3. Tap “Turn sound on” to hear a beep for each of the last 10 seconds, then a fanfare at midnight. Browsers require that tap before letting a page make noise.

Frequently asked questions

Which country celebrates New Year first?

The Line Islands in Kiribati (Kiritimati, UTC+14): they reach the new year on 31 December at 10:00 GMT. Yet Kiritimati sits in the middle of the Pacific, south of Hawaii: since 1995, the International Date Line takes a big detour east so that all of Kiribati shares the same day. New Zealand comes next, then Australia, Japan and Korea.

And which one is last?

American Samoa (UTC−11), on 1 January at 11:00 GMT. Its neighbour Samoa, about a hundred kilometres away, switched to the other side of the Date Line in 2011: it celebrates New Year 24 hours earlier! Only two uninhabited islands, Baker and Howland (UTC−12), come after American Samoa. From first to last, New Year lasts 26 hours.

Why isn’t the TV in sync with the countdown?

Live broadcasts arrive a few seconds late, and even later when streamed. Our countdown follows the exact time, corrected by a reference clock: it’s usually the TV that’s behind.

Does the countdown work offline?

Yes: once the page is open, it keeps running offline, on your device’s time. Only the reference clock correction needs a connection when the page loads.
